Website Submission to Search Engines and Directories

Search engines and directories help visitors to locate your website, apart from business/B2B portals. Some search engines use bots (automated indexing software) to find your website and list them of its own, some search engines ask you to register (which may be free or paid) to get listed and some search engines provides both options.

Incase of directories, you need to submit your website details which will be reviewed by humans (popularly known as Human-edited Directories). On approval, it will be listed under relevant category & sub category. Again, site submission procedure can be paid or free. Some directories assign volunteers (known as editors), who are made responsible to manage assigned category(s), to maintain quality standards e.g. DMOZ (Open Directory Project) earlier known as Directory of Mozilla (http://dmoz.org/)

So, if your website gets listed in various search engines and directories, then it increases the chances of visitors driving to your website. Secondly, it helps in increasing your back links, which inturns helps in improving your rankings in crawler based search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, Altavista etc.
