If you just see around on World Wide Web, you could see hundreds of search engines available. But, how many of these search engines are updating regularly, how many of these are known and used by worldwide searchers, Does it caters with required information and most important, which one should be targeted to SEO?

For SEO viewpoint, one should target those search engines that covers that maximum share of worldwide searches undertaken. As per recent statistics for the year 2007, it says,

Google is No.1 (53% of Total Search), Yahoo (20% of Total Search) is at 2nd position and MSN is at 3rd position (13% of Total Search). So, you can see that about 85% of worldwide search are carried out using these top 3 search engines. These search engines are popular because it serves best results, updates their database regularly, have their own advertising programs to attract more users, serves information to smaller search engines and more important their search algorithms gets better and better.

All three, Google, Yahoo & MSN stands different when it comes to search algorithms, factors and preferences. So, opting for Google Optimization may or may not lead to best results for Yahoo or MSN.  Ideally, all these 3 search engines intend to deliver the best results to searchers, which is a common point. So, understanding all of them, and define your SEO marketing plan accordingly will certain help in a long run.
